Ethiopian MRO successfully fits fuel saving blended winglets to its Boeing 767-300ER

Thursday, March 29, 2012

Ethiopian Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Unit has achieved another milestone with the successful fitting of blended winglets to its Boeing 767-300ER. The modification was completed and test flight was successfully performed and the aircraft will go into operations with the new fitting. This will make the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) Unit of Ethiopian Airlines the first in Africa to fit these winglets to its aircraft.

The B767-300ER blended winglets are expected to reduce fuel burn by up to 5% and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 5,000 tons per year. The blended winglets will improve the 767- 300ER performance from Addis by increasing the takeoff weight to 2.0 - 2.5 tons and the payload range by 204 nautical miles.

Ato Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO Ethiopian Airlines said, “I would like to congratulate our MRO team for the outstanding performance and for the job well done. From an economics point of view, the winglets will allow the airline to make substantial cost saving, through lower fuel consumption, which is highly critical at a time when the industry as a whole is feeling the brunt of persistent high fuel prices. This fitting will also reduce engine maintenance cost. The winglets will enhance our take-off performance specifically from our high altitude hub and increase our payload including the flight range.”

Ato Tewolde further added, “Ethiopian Airlines has made the choice of purchasing winglets for our B767 because of the enormous performance and operating value they bring. The winglets will contribute greatly to our constant and comprehensive effort to continuously reduce our carbon footprint, through lower airport noise and emissions.”

Ato Zemene Nega, Senior Vice President of MRO at Ethiopia Airlines also noted, “I sincerely believe that the fitting of these blended winglets will contribute to our productivity. Applying this technology of blended winglets will add on improved operating economies as fuel is the largest part of our airline's operating expenses.”

In November 2011, Ethiopian MRO has received the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 145 Approval, which makes the MRO capable of issuing all internationally recognized maintenance certificates for airplanes and components.

US Airways has added new service to six communities from Washington Reagan National Airport

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

US Airways customers in six communities can look forward to daily, nonstop service to Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport when then airline launches new flights in June and July. Business, government and leisure travelers in San Diego, Augusta, Ga., Minneapolis, Fayetteville, Ark., Montreal, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario will have direct access and convenient flight options to the nation's capital's downtown airport. New service to San Diego will begin on June 8, while service to all other communities will begin on July 11. Currently, no carrier at Reagan National offers nonstop service to San Diego, Augusta or Fayetteville. US Airways will fill the void with nonstop access from these communities to Reagan National Airport.
"US Airways will have a total of 22 new routes from Washington D.C.'s Reagan National beginning this spring and summer. Our growing presence at Reagan National Airport highlights our commitment to connect small, medium and large communities to the nation's capital," said Andrew Nocella, US Airways' senior vice president, marketing and planning. "We are excited to provide customers - especially those in communities that currently do not have service - with direct access to Washington's downtown airport."

The new flights are the final phase in US Airways' plan to focus on its core service areas of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C. In January, US Airways announced expanded service from Washington, D.C. to 14 destinations from Reagan National Airport. These flights will begin on March 25. The airline also announced nonstop flights between Reagan National and Cincinnati and Des Moines, Iowa that will start on May 2. Once the new flights begin, 99 percent of the airline's available seat miles (ASMs) will operate to or from its core service areas and US Airways Shuttle that operates hourly between Washington, Boston and New York's LaGuardia Airport. This represents a 16 percentage point change from 2006, when, following the merger of US Airways and America West Airlines, only 83 percent of the airline's ASMs touched its core focus areas and US Airways Shuttle

Monday, March 26, 2012

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced its Westin brand is on track to open its 200th hotel in the next 12 months, propelled by strong growth across Asia Pacific. Westin will open 11 new hotels this year, all but three outside the United States. More than half will open in China, the brand's strongest growth market. Westin will also add new hotels in Indonesia, Panama City, New York and Snowmass, Colorado.

"A long-time developer favorite in the U.S., Westin has emerged as a global market leader as witnessed by our surge of new hotel development in Asia Pacific, as well as continued momentum in Latin America," said Simon Turner, President of Global Development for Starwood. "Westin has been the brand to beat in the developed world for the better part of a decade now, with brand awareness well ahead of its competitive set despite a footprint one third the size."

Westin Extends Reach in Latin America

Westin is picking up the pace of development in Latin America where the brand has doubled its footprint over the last 18 months. Following this year's opening of The Westin Panama, the brand will boast 11 hotels in Latin America, spanning five countries: Mexico, Panama, Peru, Costa Rica and Guatemala.

"The Westin brand's emphasis on well-being has struck a chord with travelers worldwide and helped propel us forward in both established and emerging markets," said Brian Povinelli, Global Brand Leader, Westin Hotels & Resorts. "One of our most promising growth markets is Latin America, where demand for new hotels is building momentum."

Key openings in 2011 included the first Westin in South America in Lima, Peru, the sixth Starwood hotel in Panama, which is emerging as a key financial hub in Latin America, and Starwood's first all-inclusive resort - The Westin Playa Conchal Resort & Spa in Costa Rica.

Asia Pacific Demand Fuels the Westin Brand's Global Growth

Westin will add six new hotels in China in 2012, resulting in a portfolio of 19 properties in this key market by year's end, extending the brand's reach in second and third tier cities. The new Westin hotels will open in fast-growing cities across China including Ningbo, Xiamen, Changbaishan, Taiyuan, Qingdao and Xian. These openings will be followed by four more Westin hotels in China by the end of 2013.

Indonesia will welcome its second Westin in 2012 - The Westin Ubud Resort & Spa, a highly anticipated addition to the brand's growing resorts portfolio. Westin has also signed deals to debut in both Vietnam and Singapore by 2015.

Play safely on Costa Rica's beaches with this tip

Sunday, March 18, 2012

Enjoy the beaches of Costa Rica safely. Take great care at beaches that drop off steeply as you enter the water. This is an indicator not only of large waves that crash straight onto the shore but also of strong currents. Watch what the locals are doing before you venture out into the waves&whether you're swimming or surfing.

Best Compact Speakers for Your Trip

Speakers_415x270.JPG
There’s nothing like music to enhance a vacation, but all too often the speakers in hotel rooms and rentals are sadly substandard. Now, after giving these top-quality compact speakers a listen, we’ve come to believe that—just as great earphones are a must for your journey—good speakers are essential once you’ve arrived. These mini models pack a punch of audio power, and are sure to enhance your vacation’s soundtrack, whether you’re reclining on a beach in Puerto Rico or sipping prosecco on the terrace of an Italian villa.

1. Skullcandy Pipe

Why We Like It: A few times the size of the boomCAN, this is the big daddy of the group. But other than its girth, this rough-and-tumble speaker is unique amongst its peers in a few respects. It's the only dock here, which is nice for those with i-devices, but it also comes with a universal cord and input for non-Apple players. It is also the only one that runs off replaceable batteries, although it can also run off a power adapter. And it's the only one with a remote. Put all that together and you've got a nice-sounding portable speaker dock you can proudly bust out and casually control from the comfort of your deck chair.

How Much: $70

Buy It: Visit Skullcandy.com

2. iHome Audio iHM61

Why We Like It: Okay, we admit it: The mesmerizing color-changing lights are what first caught our attention. But we were pleasantly surprised to hear this speaker blast out some amazing sound. In fact, in terms of the sound you get for the money, this is definitely the best value of the bunch. It scrunches down to be pretty compact and comes with a carrying case. The groovy colored mood-lighting is optional.

How Much: $26

Buy It: Visit iHomeAudio.com

3. Mighty Dwarf 5W

Why We Like It: First, it turns whatever it is sitting on into a speaker. Half the fun is creatively placing it on an Adirondack chair or a hotel armoire to produce different sound qualities. Second, it's the only one on our list with a built-in memory card reader. That means you can either connect it to your favorite media player as an external speaker or use it as a self-contained unit capable of playing days of plentifully powerful music wherever you go. And last, Mighty Dwarf tells us they have two new souped-up versions coming out later this month.

How Much: $70

Buy It: Visit MightyDwarf.com

4. Jawbone Limited Edition Jambox

Why We Like It: Far and away, this well-designed speaker has the richest, deepest, most expansive sound of the lot. It can wirelessly connect to two devices at once. But it's also easy to use, including voice feedback in several languages. Through your computer, you can even change that voice and add other features. But what makes this particular speaker the most special is that (for a limited time) Jawbone is dedicating $50 from each Limited Edition sale to charity: water, which provides clean drinking water to those around the world who need it.

How Much: $200

Buy It: Visit Jawbone.com

5. Scosche boomCAN

Why We Like It: This tiny, shiny lightweight is no taller than your pinky. But it's a huge improvement over your portable media player's built-in speaker. And it's plenty sturdy, so don't worry about it rattling around in your shirt, pants, purse, or suitcase pocket. Fully charged, it will kick out several hours of very respectable sound. It is available in four colors and comes with a handy travel pouch.

How Much: $25

Buy It: Visit Scosche.com

6. JBL On Tour Micro

Why We Like It: Just as you might expect from JBL, this simple little hockey puck-sized speaker has excellent sound quality. It's not as bass-y as most of the others, but offers super clarity. It has an easy-to-use volume wheel and a handy stowaway wired jack. Last but not least, it's the flattest member of this group, so it's the most pocket-friendly.

How Much: $50

Buy It: Visit Amazon.com

7. X-mini KAI

Why We Like It: From the makers of the "original capsule speaker" in Singapore comes this great new wireless-capable speaker with lots of cool options. In Bluetooth mode, the controls right on the speaker allow you to play, pause, change the track, adjust the volume, mute, and answer a call—all with your music player or phone in your pocket. It has a wired output jack, so even if your music player isn't wireless, you can plug this in and still jam out. You can also plug it into another speaker, essentially creating a wireless duo of speakers—or trio, or quartet, depending on how many you have and how big the room is that you're trying to fill.

How Much: $110

Best New York City Salons for Spring Styles

Best-NYC-Salons-Spring-Pampering.jpg
Want that specific Emma Stone red? How about J. Lo’s perfect streaks? While not known for its bargain prices, New York City attracts the best-of-the-best in the beauty business. For a vacation treat, try out an edgy new haircut at a West Village salon or pull your look together with a perfect up-do for one of the Met Opera’s spring shows. These 7 top salons—frequented by celebrities and beauty editors—will get you feeling pampered and ready for that close-up shot.

Sparkle Beauty Salon

This two-chair salon on a leafy street in the West Village is New York beauty at its best: personal and precise. Founders Gabriel Trujillo Everett and Jeffrey Fernandez Diaz are veterans of fashion magazine shoots and are able to actually make that celebrity or runway hairstyle you’ve always wanted come to life.

Signature treatment: Best for a fashion-forward cut, from $100. Spring is in the air, which means it’s time for a change. One quick way to reinvent yourself is by going for a cut that reveals a new you—look what severe bangs did for Rooney Mara’s career.

Book it: Visit Sparklebeautystudio.com

Warren-Tricomi

Located in the iconic Plaza hotel, this hair salon sees a steady stream of well-coiffed ladies. But unlike some of its posh contemporaries, the mood here is anything but pretentious. Instead, this particular location (there’s also an outpost on Madison Avenue and in L.A.) always has a pleasant and chatty hubbub. There’s also a good chance you’ll see stylist Edward Tricomi, who dresses like a rock star, work his magic.

Signature treatment: Best for up-dos, prices vary. Most women go here for cuts, but up-dos for a fancy evening out, say at the nearby Lincoln Center, are fresh and modern. Ask for Pich Prum.

Book it: Visit Warrentricomi.com

Garren

If you’re looking for a quiet reprieve to the hustle and bustle of Midtown, stop into this hushed temple of hair by Garren. (Yes, like some of his famous clientele, the stylist needs only one name.) The maestro has cut the famous locks of everyone from Angelina Jolie and Gisele Bundchen to Madonna and Oprah.

Signature treatment: Classic cut, from $105. The salon can certainly do edgy, but its forte is a gorgeous, effortless style. All the stylists are strong. Manabu Unno is popular with the fashion set, but for women with thick hair, ask for Robert Vasquez.

Book it: Visit Garrennewyork.com

Rita Hazan Salon

The woman known for giving J.Lo her perfect honey streaks is based out of Manhattan. And though Rita Hazan is in high demand (she also did Elizabeth Hurley for her nuptials), her salon is chockfull of talent such as stylists Eddie Ngai and Andre Rodman. Plus, the Midtown location is conveniently on Fifth Avenue, in the heart of the famous shopping strip near Prada, Gucci and Bergdorf Goodman.

Signature treatment: Best highlights, from $250. Several prominent fashion editors have their locks lightened by Andre Rodman, who counts Zoe Saldana, Johnny Depp, and Renee Zellweger as his celebrity clients.

Book it: Visit Ritahazan.com

Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor

This Meatpacking salon is as vivacious as it is zany. Started by Michael Angelo (his real first and last name), the décor is pink, retro and fun-loving. Angelo, who built a name styling for big name magazines like Vogue, Elle, and Allure, is a favorite of the city’s socialites and supermodels for his luminous golden color and sparkling personality. And a fresh golden ‘do is sure to turn heads into the evening. The Standard hotel’s Standard Grill, Catch restaurant and Abe & Arthur’s are just a skip away.

Signature treatment: Best for blondes. Single process starts at $160 while touch-ups go from $110.

Book it: Visit Wonderlandbeautyparlor.com

Platinum Salon

With two locations in the city, in Chelsea and the Lower East Side, this salon is great for an affordable, quality blowout. The space-age fixtures can be a little jarring, but the friendly, no-attitude service more than makes up for it.

Signature treatment: Best for blowouts, from $35. The Lower East Side location is in the Hotel on Rivington and convenient to the New Museum and the downtown galleries.

Book it: Visit Platinumnewyork.com

L’Atelier de Laurie

If you were watching the Oscars last month, then you might have noticed red was just about everywhere, from Emma Stone to Jessica Chastain. Though the color is hot, not every colorist can pull off the tricky shade. Laurie Foley—on speed dial with the local fashion and beauty scene and favorite of celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow—has a way of giving depth and complexity to reds and browns. Her funky East Village space reflects the diverse boutiques and eateries scattered in the neighborhood.

Signature treatment: Best for brunette and redhead color, from $175. To fix a disastrous dye job, Foley is also wonderful for corrective color.

In 2008, the Art Deco Palmer House Hilton, built in Chicago’s Loop in 1871, underwent a massive $170 million renovation, restoring it to its former glory. The "History is Hott" tour, led by Ken Price—a 28-year veteran of the property—starts at 12:30pm daily and kicks off with prix-fixe lunch at the hotel’s Lockwood Restaurant. You're welcome to take your wine glass with you during the tour, which spans the hotel's grand ballrooms, guestrooms, and lobby, examining several vintage artifacts en route.

Insider Tip: Go back in time while you shop at Merz Apothecary, a vintage-themed cosmetic and body products shop set at the hotel’s street entrance. Although the brand has operated in Chicago since 1875, this second location only opened within the last two years.

Sign Up: Contact Lockwood Restaurant at 312-917-3404 or visit www.lockwoodrestaurant.com; tours cost $50, including lunch.

2. Hotel Valley Ho
Scottsdale, Arizona

Seven years ago, Hotel Valley Ho reopened following an extensive $80 million restoration, essentially reverting the property back to its 1950s and 1960s heyday, when Hollywood stars like Zsa Zsa Gabor, Bing Crosby, and Tony Curtis lounged around the hotel. The result is lots of turquoise and tangerine hues that stay true to the property’s Mid-Century Modern past, with modern additions like the full-service VH Spa, the comfort food-focused Café ZuZu, and OH Pool, which hosts one of Scottsdale's coolest pool parties. Get the insider's scoop on 90-minute walking tours led by an expert from Ultimate Art & Cultural Tours.

Insider Tip: Discounts at VH Spa and Café Zuzu are included in the tour price, so consider tacking on an indulgent massage or a relaxed lunch.

Sign Up: Contact the Hotel Valley Ho concierge at 480-248-2000 or visit www.hotelvalleyho.com; tours cost $19.56, an ode to the hotel’s opening year.

Plaza-NYC.jpg

3. The Plaza
New York City

For a free tour of one of New York City’s most revered hotels, situated across the street from Central Park where Fifth Avenue meets Central Park South, an architectural tour led by Francis Morrone (an architectural historian, author, and teacher) gets you an intimate tour of the iconic property's Baroque architecture; complimentary tours lasting 45 minutes are held Tuesdays and Saturdays at 3pm. You might recognize the hotel from its Hollywood debut in the 1959 Alfred Hitchcock film North by Northwest. Built in 1907, The Plaza is New York City’s only hotel to be designated as a National Historic Landmark.

Insider Tip: While the tour takes you through public spaces like the Oak Room, the Palm Court, and the Grand Ballroom, other doors that are normally closed are snapped open especially for tour participants.

Sign Up: Contact the Plaza's concierge desk at 212-546-5250 or visit www.theplaza.com; tours are free of charge.

Arizona-Biltmore-Phoenix.jpg

4. Arizona Biltmore
Phoenix, Arizona

Inspired by the late, great Frank Lloyd Wright, the Arizona Biltmore’s architect Albert Chase McArthur adopted a Prairie style for this storied resort, which is spread out across 39 acres in Phoenix. Opened in 1929, it was once owned by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr., and is second only to the Taj Mahal for its amount of gold-leaf content. Don't miss the mural by Maynard Dixon, estimated to be worth about $1.5 million. No-cost tours take place Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 10am.

Insider Tip: After the tour, grab lunch at the on-site restaurant, Frank & Albert's, which is named for Albert Chase McArthur and Frank Lloyd Wright. Or, check out the new small-plates menu added last year at Wright's at the Biltmore, also on the grounds.

Sign Up: Contact the Biltmore's concierge desk at 602-955-6600 or visit arizonabiltmore.com; tours are complimentary.

Waldorf-Astoria-NYC.jpg

5. The Waldorf Astoria
New York City

The Waldorf Astoria's "History and Art" tour is held every Thursday and Saturday at 10:15am. First opened in 1893 by William Waldorf Astor, the property relocated fifteen blocks north of its original site in 1931 to its current incarnation on Park and Lexington Avenues (between 49th and 50th Streets). The hotel’s interiors, which span an entire city block, are a fine example of Art Deco style. An official New York City landmark since 1993, it is also a member of the National Trust Historic Hotels of America. After the tour, participants are treated to a sampling of the hotel’s best dishes in Oscar's Restaurant or Peacock Gallery, making the fee well worth it.

Insider Tip: Visit www.waldorfnewyork.com to purchase a video documentary highlighting the hotel’s rich history.

Sign Up: Contact the Waldorf’s reservation desk at 212-872-1275 or visit www.waldorfnewyork.com; tours cost $50.Using: Quantcast

Best Day Trips From London

Thursday, March 15, 2012

London-Day-Trip-Malmaison.jpg
London is 2012's "it" spot, with its popularity booming as it hunkers down to host the Olympics and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. As spectacular as the city is, however, it's a shame to be locked down within its limits: There's just too much to explore within easy day tripping-distance. Here are our picks for the —the ones Londoners themselves can't resist. They’re primed for what the Brits call a "day return," but can easily be extended to include an overnight stay as part of a longer UK vacation.

R & R Retreat in Bath

Picturesque Bath, set about two hours from the capital, has been a fashionable place to visit ever since the Romans ruled Britain nearly 2,000 years ago. The city’s natural hot springs, which heated its grand Roman Baths, are now the site of a museum depicting a particularly vivid view of life in that era. (Another period museum worth a visit is the Jane Austen Centre, a homage to the city's most famous literary resident.) The thermal waters are still in use at Thermae Bath Spa, where soothing soaks can be booked in two-hour increments; spa treatments are also offered at two of the city’s most luxurious hotels, the Royal Crescent Hotel and The Bath Priory. For a delicious meal to follow up your soak, head to local favorite Menu Gordon Jones, a cozy gourmet restaurant that offers a regularly rotating multicourse menu.

A Day at the Beach in Brighton

A trip to the beach isn’t what most people associate with Great Britain, but Brighton’s funky oceanfront charm is fun even when it’s not warm enough to swim (which is indeed most of the time). The city’s under an hour by train from London, and filled with quirky shops and hotels like the Hotel Pelirocco, which has dubbed itself "England’s Most Rock and Roll Hotel." (Each room is uniquely decorated, with music-related themes like "Pin Up Parlour" and "Soul Supreme.") But the best things to do in Brighton are the most basic: Walking along the beach, taking a look at the Indian-inspired Royal Pavilion (originally built for King George IV), or eating fish and chips at a seaside café (although gourmands head to Terre à Terre, a vegetarian restaurant that even meat-eaters can love.)

A Step Back in Time in Canterbury

It's only an hour and a half or so by train from London, but it's easy to feel like you've gone back in time in Canterbury, where many centuries-only buildings are still intact (including some from the 14th century, circa the famous Canterbury Tales) and the spires of the famous, majestic cathedral always loom large in the background. But this small city's also got modern touches, like Deeson's, a foodie-favored restaurant with locally sourced ingredients, and chic boutique hotel Abode. Don't miss stopping by Madame Oiseau, a French-run sweet shop that's essentially a real-life version of the chocolatier featured in Chocolat.

Quaint Escape in Historic Oxford

Oxford's best known for its world-famous university, which offers tours at many of the colleges, but there's plenty more to do in this truly quaint city, from taking in the art at the world-class Ashmolean Museum to just browsing along the cobblestone streets. For an upscale bite, the brasserie at the Malmaison hotel is a popular choice, tucked in the basement of a former 19th-century prison.

Several destinations on the fringes of Oxford are worth a visit, as well: Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons, a Michelin-starred restaurant from celebrity-chef Raymond Blanc (with accommodations, too, if you opt to sleep off your supper); Babington House, a country hotel (part of the super-stylish Soho House chain) set in a majestic former residence à la Downton Abbey; and Bicester Village, an outlet mall touting top brands like Dior, Missoni, and Marni.
